Meditation. Itís something that seems like such a good idea. All of the articles and conscientious friends tout it as one of the best things you can do for yourself. Iíve always been interested, and even dabbled a few times in an introductory workshop or such, but never have been able to make myself put it on the priority list. My life in the past year, though, has handed me enough opportunities to see that I need to change something and gain skills to help me deal calmly with the stressful situations that arise that I am taking fairly desperate measures. In January I am taking a 10-day course in Vipassana meditation. (http://www.dhamma.org/ ) I have a friend who did this last year and had only wonderful things to say about the experience. Iím thinking of it as a meditation bootcampÖ an adventure into my mind. It certainly eats up a lot of vacation days, but in the grand scheme of things it is but a drop in the bucket.
Iíve never really spent much of any time with my mind. Iím always busy with my ďto-do listsĒ and trying to deal with the minutia (or even the huge-decisions) of my life. Iím very curious to discover what will happen when I spend so much time with my thoughts. This is a silent meditation retreat, so the distractions to the mind are tried to be minimized in every way. 10 days is a long time to be exclusively dedicated to any one thing, and Iím sure that it will not be easy. I hope to walk away from the experience knowing more about myself, and hopefully adding a new habit to my arsenal of being a better person, leading an even better life.
Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know its minutia, its characteristics, it subtleties, and its very atoms.
Have you seen this marvelously inspiring video? http://tinyurl.com/2dbe2mr I know as soon as I saw it I thought I should revisit my volunteering efforts and went to my favorite site to find out what more was needed in my area. If you are feeling like youíd like to do more, too, check out:
